The evening of July 13th 2023 held a close place in many hair metal enthusiasts hearts as it was the first night of Picktown Palooza, located in Pickerington, Ohio, and the night Vixen hit the stage. The festival hosted a stage for notable guests like Nelson, Jackyl, and Slaughter as well as the goddesses previously mentioned, A girl group who once, and still do, own every stage they step foot upon consists of four foxes, Lorraine Lewis (Lead vocals), Britt Lightning (Lead and rhythm guitar), Julia Lage (Bass guitar), and Roxy Petrucci (Drums). Ever since 1980, this band has put on one hell of a performance and show no signs of slowing down.
While this was my first time seeing the ladies, they made it feel like home. It felt so familiar to me as Roxy smiled, pointed, and mouthed things at me and my group in the front row. During “Hellraiser” Lorraine came down from her throne to headbang with us girls, later mouthing “Love you guys” which made us hoop and holler even harder. New blood, Julia Lage, pointed via the headstock of her bass and smiled her infectious smile making the festival goers fall more and more in love with the group. After the show, I had gotten in contact with Britt via Instagram, she had said that I remind her of her best friend, and it threw me on a new level of enthusiasm for the group.
Honestly, the rest of the world disappeared as soon as those four women took the stage. The group around me as well as myself were absolutely jamming out the entire set and didn’t care if others thought we looked silly. As a female musician, they made me feel important, seen, and accepted which doesn’t always happen in this crazy, degrading world of rock n’ roll. Finally being able to catch this band and check them off my list is astronomical in knowing that their first studio album came out 35 years ago. That’s five times longer than the average band’s lifespan! Here’s to many more tours to uplift many more women worldwide!
