2023 was a good year for extreme metal. Norway’s Tsjuder absolutely turned the world of black metal on its head with one of the best True Norwegian Black Metal albums in many years. This album will certainly become a classic. On the other side of the extreme spectrum, New York death metal legends Suffocation proved that they still have the wherewithal and pitriffs after the departure of vocalist Frank Mullen. Their new album, Hymns From The Apocrypha, is a monster of an album that fires on all cylinders. These same sentiments can be said of underground death metal gods Incantation and their new album, Unholy Deification. This is an incredible album full of classic Incantation blasts and doom. Still in the realm of old school death metal, Florida’s Obituary topped many year end lists with their album Dying Of Everything, which contained some of the band’s best riffs in many years. Relative newcomers, Sanguisugabogg, delivered on the hype surrounding their new album Homicidal Ecstasy – an album that combines the band’s very own take on slam with that of old school death metal. A refreshing entry into the world of death metal.
